Greeting the dawn in Jakarta

What does one do on a plane for 14 and then 8 more hours? Well, it turns out that watching the information display for the airplane is pretty darn interesting. My favorite thing was this screen. It shows where the sun is hitting and where your plane is. When you fly east for as many miles as we have flown (more than 9000), these sine waves of sunlight move left as the day progresses and your plane moves right as it travels. That means that time really speeds by, at least according to your watch. For example, we left Cleveland on a 7am flight on Sunday, and landed in Jakarta early Tuesday morning (included stops and layovers in Dallas and Dubai). Of course on a plane, fourteen hours doesn't really feel any faster than fourteen hours.
So, it turns out that the plane met the light part of the sine wave right as we landed in Jakarta this morning. What a beautiful sight! Lush grasses, tropical looking plants, and 82 degrees, which sure does beat the -9 that Oberlin is currently experiencing.
100 minutes left on this five-hour layover. Then a two hour flight to Banda Aceh and a hotel..... Can't wait for the long travel days to end!
